Making the Most of Welcome Week (Even If You’re Not a Fresher!)

There’s a common myth that Welcome Week is only for first-years. But if you’re returning to uni after summer, it’s actually the perfect chance to ease yourself back into student life, meet new people, and have fun before lectures kick off.

As I head into second year, I’ve been thinking about all the things I’m excited to do this September—while deadlines and exams are still a distant thought. Here are my top tips for making the most of Welcome Week as a returning student:

1. Hit the Welcome Fairs

Everyone assumes these fairs are just for freshers’ but trust me—they’re for everyone. Not only are they a great place to stock up on freebies (tote bags, pens, keyrings—you name it), but they’re also the best way to discover societies you didn’t even know existed.

Societies often launch new groups each year, so you might stumble across something brand new that sparks your interest. Plus, there are usually fun activities and food stalls dotted around. Last year, I remember a free burger truck parked at St Luke’s campus… and yes, it was as delicious as it sounds.

2. Try Society Taster Sessions

This is one of my favourite parts of Welcome Week. Loads of societies—from sports to dance to cultural groups—offer free or super cheap taster events. It’s a low-pressure way to try new things, meet new people, and decide what you actually want to commit to for the year.

Pro tip: don’t rush into buying memberships. Lots of societies offer termly memberships, so you don’t need to lock yourself into the full year straight away. I learned this the hard way when I paid for a year-long membership… and then couldn’t fit it into my schedule.

And if sports societies aren’t your thing but you still want to stay active, a gym membership might be a better alternative.

3. Explore Exeter (and Beyond)

September is the sweet spot—lectures haven’t started yet, the workload is low, and the weather is (hopefully) still decent. So why not take advantage?

Hop on a train or bus to the coast—Exmouth and Dawlish Warren are student favourites—or venture further afield to Plymouth, Bath, or Bristol for a day trip. Exploring with friends before the semester really starts is the perfect way to make memories.

If you’d rather stick closer to home, Exeter has plenty to offer too. One of my top recommendations is Escape Hunt, where I once tried a pirate-themed escape room. Solving puzzles with friends under time pressure was surprisingly addictive—and way more fun than it sounds on paper.

Final Thoughts

Welcome Week doesn’t have to be a one-and-done experience from your first year. It’s a chance to reconnect, discover new things, and enjoy a week of fun before academic life kicks in again. Whether you’re collecting freebies, trying out a new sport, or exploring Devon, there’s always something to dive into.

So even if you’re not a fresher, grab your friends (or go solo!) and make the most of it—you won’t regret it.
