So, you’re coming to Exeter - welcome! Whether you're buzzing with excitement, feeling a bit nervous or somewhere in between, your first week is all about exploring, meeting new people and starting to make this city feel like home.
Discover the City
Exeter might not be the biggest city, but it packs a punch. The Cathedral Green is the heart of the city, perfect for picnics, people-watching or just soaking up the atmosphere with new flatmates. Head down to the Quayside, a scenic stretch of waterfront packed with cafés, pubs and even paddleboarding if you’re feeling adventurous.
Fancy something a bit different? Hop on a short train ride to the beach at Exmouth or explore nearby Dartmoor for epic countryside views.

Dive Into Campus Life
Your new home away from home will quickly start to feel familiar. Keep an eye out for Welcome Week events, from society fairs and campus tours to quiz nights, there’s something for everyone. Whether you're joining a society, trying out yoga or just going along for free pizza (we don’t judge), it's the easiest way to meet people and find your tribe.
Nights Out? Let’s Talk Timepiece
Ask any Exeter student where to go for a big night out and you’ll almost definitely hear: Timepiece. Known simply as "TP", this iconic nightclub is a rite of passage, whether you’re dancing in the cellar or grabbing a kebab from Efes afterwards, it’s guaranteed to be a night to remember.
Other top spots include Move, for live DJs and gigs or The Old Firehouse, with its legendary pizzas and cosy vibes.
Don’t Forget the Basics
Among all the fun, it’s worth ticking off a few essentials. Register with a GP, collect your student ID and download the MyExeter app to help you find your way around and to access your timetable for the term. There’s loads of support available too, from Wellbeing Services to study skills workshops so you’re never on your own.
Eat, Drink, Relax
There’s no shortage of great food and drink spots. Try the independent cafés on Gandy Street, try the £5 bottomless pancakes at Bill’s or relax with friends at The Old Firehouse, rumoured to have inspired a certain Harry Potter pub. There’s plenty to explore and it’s all walkable from Exeter campuses!
Ready to Dive In?
Exeter has a way of making you feel at home fast. So, whether you’re dancing at Timepiece, exploring the quay or just getting to know your flatmates over a cup of tea, enjoy every minute.
