We are extremely saddened to see the distressing news of the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria, which have been devastating, with widespread destruction and tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected in the region and worldwide. We are reaching out to our societies/communities to see if there is anything more we can do to support them at this time, and welcome any students to contact us if they are in need or have ideas about what we can do to best assist them.
We know this will be a very anxious time for many in our community, and we are here to support you. If you need urgent support, or someone to talk to, please do get in touch with our Advice Team or the University’s wellbeing service for support and guidance; they are here to help you.
Please also remember that if your studies, including examinations and assessments, are affected by your personal circumstances, then the University’s Mitigation process is there to help support you. Mitigation works by giving you extra time to complete your assignment, or the chance to take your exam later in the year. Find information about mitigation here.
A number of members of our community have asked about fundraising for the victims of the earthquake.
Turkish Society at the University of Exeter, on behalf of all Turkish Societies in Britain have created a fundraiser. Funds raised will be donated to AFAD (A government organization set up to provide for people affected by earthquakes in Turkey) and also AHPAB (An organization to support people affected by earthquakes). Donate here.
You could also donate to one of these established charities affiliated with the Disasters Emergency Committee. Links to their current appeals are as follows:
Any donation, big or small can provide vital support.
