Winter in Exeter: A Festive Guide

As the evenings draw in and the lights begin to sparkle across the city, Exeter transforms into one of the most magical places to spend the winter. Whether you're here until the end of term, or staying in the city throughout the holidays, there are countless ways to enjoy this time of year as a student.

The Sparkling City

From 14 November, the city launched ‘Follow the Stars to Exeter’, a trail of lights and projections illuminating the High Street and surrounding streets. The walk from campus into town suddenly feels a little more special, as you can soak up the Christmas atmosphere with glowing decorations creating the perfect backdrop for winter photos and cosy catchups. It also provides the perfect excuse to grab a hot chocolate, meet up with friends, and enjoy that warm, wintery feeling that Exeter seems to get just right.

Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market

20 November – 19 December
No Exeter winter is complete without at least one trip to the Cathedral Christmas Market. Set on the green in front of the magnificent cathedral, the market is illuminated by festive lights which bring together more than 100 chalets filled with artisan gifts, handmade treats, and some of the city’s best street food. You’ll find everything from fudge and churros to mulled wine and hot chocolate. It’s the ideal place to browse for presents, enjoy a warm drink, or simply soak up the festive atmosphere. The Cathedral also hosts beautiful seasonal performances, including candlelit concerts and the much-loved Exeter Nativity, offering a moment of calm in the midst of a busy academic term.

Princesshay’s Christmashay Village

Just a few steps from the High Street, Princesshay is transformed into a magical Christmas Village from 14 November. The area is filled with festive stalls along with a Mistletoe Bar complete with covered seating – perfect for catching up with friends after a library session. On Thursday evenings, the whole area comes alive for late-night shopping with street entertainment, music, and the return of the SPARK! Drummers, whilst Sundays offer a more whimsical setting, with visits from Father Christmas.

Winter Wonderland at Northernhay Gardens

From 22 November to 24 December, Northernhay Gardens becomes Winter Wonderland, bringing an ice rink, gentle twinkling lights, a carousel, festive food stalls and a Santa’s Grotto. Whether you’re planning a house outing, a society social, or simply want to do something different to mark the season, it’s a brilliant way to spend a winter’s afternoon or evening.

 Staying Connected With the Guild

For some students, travelling home over the winter break isn’t always possible – but that doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on the Christmas magic. The Students’ Guild will be hosting a range of welcoming events throughout December and into the break, from cosy movie nights and boardgames to Christmas craft afternoons and relaxed socials. These gatherings are designed to help you meet new people and allows you to stay connect with others over a time that (although very enjoyable), can also be lonely for many people. So if you’re staying in the city, know that you won’t be celebrating alone –there’s a community here ready to share the season with you.

To keep up with what’s happening, check the events listings and follow @exeterguild on Instagram, where events are announced regularly and updated throughout the term.
