I'm Zeph, a third-year English and Creative Writing student, and I want to make the university experience for neurodivergent students in particular a much more welcoming and enticing one.
Improving on campus spaces for neurodivergent students
There is currently good support for neurodivergent and disabled students at the University, but improvements can always be made! My big idea was specifically to upgrade quiet spaces we already have into areas tailored more towards neurodivergent students and staff - to make sensory rooms on campus, which would improve overall student experience and satisfaction.
I think it was probably when I started hearing that more members of the Exeter Student's Guild were starting to back my campaign. For example, I was put in contact with the Guild President, Seb, to further my project as he too wants to improve quiet spaces on campus and has the connections with the University to make those changes happen. It makes me so happy to hear the positive reactions to my project when I catch people mentioning it. The talking is happening and that is the first stage of change. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
It would create a more welcoming environment for all kinds of students, rather than settling for satisfying the majority. It is integral to the daily life of neurodivergent students to have time to regulate their emotions because of how differently things affect us.
Sensory rooms would improve this experience for us and allow more students to reach their full potential, all whilst enjoying their social lives and academic lives at university. Neurodivergent students deserve to feel like they belong, that they are being listened to and cared for and accepted rather than tolerated.
The Guild has been encouraging and supportive all throughout my project, offering suggestions and connection pathways, asking questions and showing me how to access resources I need, all whilst boosting my confidence and independence.
Just be brave and get your ideas out there - make connections with people, share your thoughts, make yourself heard. Someone WILL listen, I promise!
